: Visit to Samburu Game Reserve Low
point : Numerous vehicle breakdowns The
game reserves we visited are excellent; the costs
for foreign tourists / foreign registered vehicles
are acceptable. Information from guide books, brochures,
etc. was good and up to date.
The
highlands of the country are also very fertile;
fresh produce are available everywhere at fair prices.
Facilities are priced reasonably as well as meals
and drinks.
The
roads are generally in a reasonable condition with
visible signs of ongoing maintenance; the exception
being the road from Isiolo to Moyale which was in
a shocking state: severe corrugations, volcanic
rocks and stones, dust holes and erosion scouring.
The cost of fuel is however very high.
We
found the people of Kenya very friendly and helpful.
We never felt threatened or unsafe; even in Nairobi
we never experienced any serious security problems.
No escort or convoy driving was required for the
section of road from Isiolo to Moyale.
Due to
concerns regarding the ability of our vehicle, we
decided not to drive via Lake Turkana to Marsabit;
hopefully we can include this section as part of
our return trip once we feel comfortable with our
vehicle.
We experienced
unexpected problems/breakdowns with our vehicle:
- Steel
brake pipes cracked
- Flexible brake
hosing perished
- Rear coil spring
broke (new set couriered from RSA)
- Chassis cracked
- Sub-frame of living
unit cracked/collapsed
This
resulted in us spending 3,5 weeks in Nairobi and
being delayed with our planned progress. The chassis
and sub-frame cracked on the Isiolo to Moyale road
and we will try to have it repaired/strengthened
in Addis Ababa. We will reconsider our planned route
once we can establish the status of the vehicle
after the repairs in Addis Ababa.
