Proposed Route

Our proposed route is briefly discussed in country-order by activating each of the the links on the left. (please note that quite a few countries have not been added - it is cururently been done by our webmasters.)

Our actual route might vary from what we intend, so please see our main menu "Route Progress" in order to know where we are and what we are up to.

The security situation in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo), Angola and the CAR (Central African Republic) forced us to travel along the Eastern side of Africa.

The route through North Africa will depend on our assessment of the security risks of crossing through the Sahara Region – our planned route is based on information available at present.

We have travelled extensively in Southern Africa (Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Southern Zambia); therefore we decided to drive straight to Northern Zambia and to head for the unknown.

We managed to obtain most of our visas in Pretoria before leaving South Africa. However, we were not able to obtain visas for Ethiopia, Chad, Niger and Benin. It was possible to arrange for the visas that we could obtain from the various Embassies in Pretoria, South Africa to be valid for the time when we envisage to visit the respective countries, with the exception of Libya and Egypt. We plan to extend the visas for Libya and Egypt along the route. We plan to obtain the visas for Ethiopia in Nairobi (Kenya), and the visas for Chad and Niger in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia).

We were very glad when friends with a similar vehicle, James & Heleen Moulder, decided to accompany us on the first part of our trip. They plan to go along as far as Ethiopia – we hope that they will continue further.

After a delay we finally managed to leave Pretoria on the afternoon of 2 June 2004.
